Pupils from Newport scooped a £10,000 prize.
The group of 16 enterprising students took part in the young Hight Street Challenge, set up to encourage ideas to refresh town centres in Telford & Wrekin.
The school’s Wellington Market team, led by Tia McCory, 14, shared the category prize for their scheme to overhaul the indoor site. Their project included a plan to improve access at the rear entrance by installing automatic doors, increase footfall by holding themed events in an outside entertainment hub for live music and a ghost hunt based on rumours of a ‘presence’ at the site.
The final idea was to improve the overall look of the market by installing artwork, new lighting, plants and a tiled entrance display for families to have their hand prints and names displayed on the wall to provide a sense of community.
They were named joint category winners with Adams Haberdashers’ Grammar. The money will be put towards developing their ideas with support from the borough council. Both were awarded £10,000.
A second team led by captain Adrianna Wheeler, 12, came up with a business plan for a Japanese themed healthty smoothie shop in Newport High Street.
