Christmas Countdown to get Underway

By Newport’s Mayor Peter Scott:
The countdown to Christmas starts this Friday as the Christmas lights go on! Sadly we could not have the usual Switch On event but you will notice over the daytime that sections of lights will be switched on leading to what we think is an excellent display that will last until the New Year.
We have announced the winners of the Christmas Card competition. Details on our website and Facebook page. There is to be a Christmas Window Display competition too so Newport will be looking festive and welcome to all. The Choose Newport Team will be handing out festive shopping bags, beer mats and napkins shortly. Have a look in the Guildhall window for a sneak preview of what is on offer.
Your 12 town councillors have been out and about delivering Newport Ward flyers with their contact details on. Please keep it somewhere handy in case you need to contact us.
It was an honour to lay wreaths on behalf of the town at the RBL and NTC Remembrance events. A big shame that not everyone could take part but both services were recorded and can be viewed on the relevant Facebook pages or You Tube. My sincere thanks to everyone who made these events happened. Newport did remember.
A pleasure to welcome both Catherine’s Bakery and the Box of Goodness to Newport High Street. Both businesses have been well received and will clearly prosper. I wish them well. The enforced extra lockdown has hit some of our businesses particularly in hospitality and beauty although there still seems to be some vibrancy to the High Street.
In the main most people have adhered to the lockdown rules so let us all hope that we see a reduction in Covid cases and a return for those that have had to close. It is very important to the future of the town that we support local as much as we can.
The council held another virtual full meeting last week and it was good to have some residents on to observe. Please remember the meetings are open to anyone and Newport residents can ask questions on any agenda item. Please contact the Town Clerk if you wish to attend. On the whole we still manage to fulfil our local responsibilities despite the restrictions of the pandemic. All staff and councillors are here for you if you need us. Contact details are on our website, the Guildhall window, Aldi noticeboard or on your flyers. Stay safe. Look after each other.
