Praise for Launch of Newport Neighbourhood Watch
Written by BBC News on March 19, 2019
A Newport Town Councillor has praised the efforts of a husband and wife team in spearheading a new Neighbourhood Watch scheme for the town.
Nick and Jo Garvey registered the new scheme because they wanted “a safe environment in which to bring up their children, but saw police presence falling in Newport”.
Mr Garvey said “One of the best things about Newport is its community spirit. Whilst alert residents are not a substitute for the police, we have a real opportunity to harness this spirit to make our town safer.”
Mr and Mrs Garvey have obtained signage for the town, and are looking for volunteers to assist in erecting it.
Newport Town Councillor Thomas Janke, who is also a member of the new scheme, said: “Jo and Nick Garvey have done a fantastic job in getting this scheme off the ground. Our local police work extremely hard for our town, but they are a very small team and cannot be everywhere at once.”
The scheme covers all of Newport and residents can join Neighbourhood Watch online at: www.westmercianw.org.uk
